Scotland has its own unique history, culture and traditions that make it an exciting destination for a holiday. The country has plenty to offer and millions of tourists are attracted here every year for its stunning landscape, snow-capped mountains, mysterious lochs and fascinating cities. Whatever time of year you visit there is always something to interest and entertain, and with plenty of self catering accommodation in Aviemore you can take the whole family along.

Aviemore and the Cairngorm area are located between Perth and Inverness, within the Cairngorms National Park in the Highlands of Scotland. Their breathtaking scenery and traditional appeal, added to the wide range of activities and attractions available in the area, make them a popular destination for tourists and locals.

Relatively easy to reach by road, there are also coach services available and the rail network links Aviemore to the main nearby cities of Inverness, Glasgow, Edinburgh with a direct service from London. The nearest airport is Inverness, just over an hour away.

One of the main reasons the area is so fashionable is for the fantastic winter sports opportunities. The Cairngorm Mountains are nearby and, if the weather is right, then you can take the ski lift up to Britain’s highest restaurant to be awed by the magnificent views or just sit and watch the skiers. The slopes can accommodate beginners or skilled skiers and there are lessons available and equipment for hire. Hill walking is another popular winter sport on the mountain, or try snowboarding and sledging. There is snow on the mountain generally from December until March or April.

Aviemore can be the perfect place for a romantic weekend, a short break with friends or to bring the family for some fun. It’s the ideal place for a family holiday as it offers plenty of activities and attractions to keep the kids entertained.

At CairnGorm Mountain, take the railway to the top, 1097m above sea level it is safe for all ages and the best way to experience how the change in altitude can affect the weather and the landscape. There is also a mountain exhibition and a wild garden to take a look around and the self guided trails present great opportunities for kids to explore the Scottish countryside. If your kids are a little young for this then an alternative is the Strathspey Steam Railway, an exciting adventure for all the family. The round trip leaves from Aviemore, passing through Boat of Garten to Broomhill and takes around 1½ hours. This is a popular attraction with tourists as you can sit back and admire the beautiful Cairngorm Mountains in leisure and experience riding along on a steam engine.

Just a few minutes from Aviemore is the Highland Estate of Rothiemurchus, a stimulating place to hang out with the kids for a few hours, where you can spot Pine Martens, Badgers and Red and Roe Deer. If you are birdwatching expect to see Great Spotted Woodpeckers, Tawny Owls and Woodcocks. Worth visiting just for the stunning landscape and wildlife, there are also lots of activities offered for families. They have a friendly Rothiemurchus Ranger to take the kids on a trail and discover the wild area in a fun and interactive way. Family rafting is organized so it is safe and suitable for the younger members of the family with an expert guide on the raft, and there’s a chance to meet some of the residents of the farm such as a Highland cow and Red Deer Stags, if you’re lucky.
